Hammer union seals are used in the connections between flexible hoses or pipes used in the oil drilling industry. The

seal provides a critical fluid tight connection within the union hardware. Hammer unions consist of a thread end, a nut

end, and a hammer nut that when tightened seal the assembly with the assistance of an elastomeric seal. The seal is

matched to the union seat and seal profile; confirm the retention design for the specified hardware.

Identify drilling mud composition, hydrocarbons and abrasive solids exposure when requesting a compound recommendation.

Seal profile, compound grade and any backup element must match the union seat and service requirements.

For offshore or onshore flowline service, provide the union manufacturer, figure, nominal size and operating conditions.

Inspect the complete union hardware and follow the applicable installation and test procedure.

Seal replacement alone does not establish the condition or pressure rating of the complete connection.

NBR, HNBR, FKM, FFKM and PTFE are separate material options to review against the actual union and service conditions. The material family alone does not establish a shared temperature range, chemical rating or working pressure. Ask for the exact grade, component dimensions and any qualification requirements before substitution.

• Provide the union manufacturer, figure designation, nominal size and seal drawing or existing part reference.
• State fluid composition, concentration, temperature, pressure, solids content and gas or H2S exposure.
• Specify elastomer-only, brass-backed or stainless-steel-backed configuration according to the union design; review backup material compatibility separately.
• Request compound-specific elastomer hardness. PTFE components need their own material specification rather than a universal Shore A range.
• Identify the required color and identification markings separately from the compound grade; color alone does not establish material performance.

The listed nominal sizes are separate matched configurations. FIG 602, 1002 and 1502 identify union configurations and do not provide a pressure value in psi. FFKM inquiries require confirmation of the exact grade and matched profile. Provide the requirements and quantity for a material-specific quotation.
