Nitrile Hammer Union Seals with Metal Backing — Gas-Service Compound Review

Hammer Union seals:

Nitrile (NBR/Buna-N) hammer union seals are selected with the matching union profile and service specification. Brass or stainless steel backing supports the rubber against extrusion at the designed clearance. Specify the elastomer compound, metal grade and seal dimensions rather than selecting the construction from nominal connection size alone.
For replacement parts, provide the union manufacturer, figure and assembly drawing. Check lip geometry, retention features and backing position against the original seal. Inspect the mating seat and use the connection manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Different union figures and sizes may use a lip seal or an O-ring. Confirm the actual sealing arrangement and tolerances from the original drawing or part number before choosing a replacement.
A generic nitrile seal must not be assumed qualified for sour gas. Provide H2S/CO2 composition, pressure, temperature, exposure duration and decompression rate, together with the required compound tests. FKM or HNBR alternatives also require grade-specific evaluation. Review brass or stainless steel compatibility separately; the backing ring does not establish gas-service qualification or assembly pressure rating.
