HNBR and NBR Rubber Packer Elements for Oilfield Drilling Tools

Features of the rubber oil packer cups:

1) Specify differential pressure, temperature and fluid exposure for the selected compound.

2) Match seal geometry and mounting details to the approved tool drawing.

3) Nominal size options require actual bore and finished-part confirmation.

4) A requested 150°C (302°F) test needs an agreed compound, fixture, pressure and acceptance limits.

5) Define loading range, temperature and dwell times for a 30-cycle requirement.

6) Large cups, including a requested 30-inch diameter, require drawing and manufacturing review.

HNBR and NBR packer elements for oilfield drilling tools are specified by compound, hardness, geometry and operating conditions. Include drilling or completion fluids, additives and cleaning chemicals when requesting material review. Cup-style seals and compression-set elements require different mounting and sealing details.

Standard packer cups types:

Wire packer cups:Wire-reinforced cups form directional seals. Specify insert and reinforcement geometry, lip orientation and actual bore dimensions for the intended single, dual or multiple-cup arrangement.

Heavy-duty packer cups:Heavy-duty cups may use double-basket reinforcement for repeated movement, including well washing. Confirm basket geometry, metal treatment, compound and mounting interface; the designation alone does not establish a pressure rating.

All-rubber packer cups:All-rubber cups have no wire reinforcement in the cup body. Confirm compound, lip geometry and any separate insert against the movement and wear requirements of the tool.

Threaded packer cups:Threaded cups connect through a specified insert. Provide thread form, size and engagement. Steam exposure requires compound-specific review; suitability for high-pressure washing must not be assumed.

Nominal application sizes include 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 inches. Broader cup applications from 1-1/4-inch tubing through 7-inch casing require separate drawing review. Supply actual bore and finished dimensions for each part.

Custom NBR and HNBR rubber parts are reviewed from drawings or samples for the intended drilling-tool assembly. FKM alternatives need their own compatibility and temperature review. Drillability and zonal-isolation performance require complete-tool confirmation.

The TA swab cup is a medium-duty, all-rubber variable lip cup that offers greater flexibility under lighter loads.

The MV swab cup is a light-duty, all-rubber cup with multiple flexible, upturned lips for sand-laden fluid applications. Confirm tool and tubing fit before selection.

The V swab cup is a ring-type, single-lip, flexible, all-rubber cup molded on a steel bushing. It is ideal for lifting sand-laden fluids and for light-load swabbing. It is a single version of the MV swab cup.

The TUF swab cup is a flexible, synthetic rubber cup with spring steel reinforcing wires for heavy loads but is flexible enough for light or medium loads.

The UF swab cup is an all-purpose, synthetic rubber cup containing strong, flexible spring steel reinforcing wires.

The J swab cup is a durable, heavy-duty cup with a long, flexible lip and strong steel reinforcing wires which provide a good upstroke seal for lifting heavy loads.

The GW swab cup is a heavy, flexible, single-lip cup reinforced by spring steel wire. The oversized lip creates a good upstroke seal.

Preparing a Drilling-Tool Packer Element Specification

Identify the tool model, part revision and seal construction. Specify HNBR or NBR compound, hardness and dimensions with tolerances. If changing material, review the mating geometry and operating requirements together rather than substituting by polymer name alone.

Provide fluid formulation and additives, normal and peak temperature, differential pressure and cycling conditions. Include gas composition and decompression requirements where applicable, along with any required compound qualification tests.

Send the drawing or original sample with mounting, support and reinforcement details. Agree finished-part inspection and material or assembly test requirements before production.
