1. What does a thread protector cap cover?
The covered surfaces depend on cap depth, seating and connection geometry. Identify the thread area and pipe end surfaces required on the drawing.
The 3-1/8 inch reference must be linked to a defined dimension; it does not alone specify thread form, end orientation or closure.
2. What information is needed to specify coverage?
a. Pipe family and complete connection designation.
b. Pin or box end and drawing revision.
c. Cap depth, engagement length and seating position.
d. Thread and end surfaces to be covered.
e. Clearances and installation/removal requirements.
f. PP grade, color and identification.
g. Exposure conditions, quantity and packing instructions.
3. Does a cap provide a pressure or weather seal?
1. A thread protector designation alone does not establish sealing performance.
2. Specify whether open, vented or closed geometry is required.
3. Define ingress or closure acceptance criteria where needed.
4. Confirm the actual construction against the approved drawing.
5. Require relevant testing before using any sealing claim.
4. What should be checked when the sample arrives?
1. Confirm item, connection and end orientation.
2. Inspect for cracks, distortion and damaged engagement.
3. Check fit and seating on the intended pipe end.
4. Verify required coverage and removal clearance.
5. Record results against the approved sample and drawing.
