HDPE and ABS Oilfield Thread Protectors — Transport and Storage Specification
Plastic pin and box thread protectors are specified for the exact pipe connection and handling conditions. Provide the connection designation, nominal pipe size, thread drawing and seal-area coverage requirements.
Choose HDPE or ABS as a separate material grade and define storage temperature, outdoor exposure, impact and retention acceptance criteria. Include identification markings, packing quantity and whether the protector will be inspected for reuse.

Oilfield thread protectors help shield pipe threads and connection seal areas during transportation and storage. Match thread engagement, coverage and installation method to the exact pin or box drawing. A protector does not serve as a pressure closure or a lifting attachment.
For shipment and storage, specify handling impacts, expected duration, temperature and exposure to sunlight or storage compounds. Inspect fit and damage before reuse and replace protectors that no longer engage correctly.
Plastic and metal-plastic composite constructions require separate material and drawing specifications. Select the required construction from the handling duty rather than assuming all protectors provide the same protection.
Size references include tubing, casing and drill-pipe connections. State the complete designation, such as NC, REG, BTC, STC or LTC where applicable, plus pin or box end. Different thread families are not interchangeable. Any API-related requirement must identify the applicable standard, profile and inspection criteria before conformity can be established.
